Obituary: "Michael 'Kuby' Hupchuk Sr.
We wish to announce the passing of our loved on Mike 'Kuby' Hupchuk on Saturday, Sept. 28, 1996 in Thunder Bay, Ont. He was born Feb. 26, 1924 in Fort Frances, Ont. to the late Mary Sandull and Nicholas Hupchuk. He was united in marriage to Diana Verheul on Jan. 8, 1946 in Amsterdam, Holland. He returned to Fort Frances to live and raise his family until his death. Together they raised three children, Susanna and husband Gary of Fort Frances, Angela Strandhagen and husband, Bruce, of Boca Raton, FL., Michael Hupchuk and fiance, Sharon Gammond, of Thunder Bay. He is also survived by his grand-children, Tina Leimenstoll and husband, Tom, Anita Barker, and Dan Barker, all of Fort Frances, Barb Sonnentag and husband, Terry, of Waconia, MN, Chuck Strandhagen, Tessa Strandhagen, and Clint Strandhagen of Boca Raton, FL., Mathew and Mitchell Hupchuk, and Darcy and Jennifer Anderson of Thunder Bay; great-grandchildren Luke and Chad Leimenstoll and Curtis Barker of Fort Frances: sisters, Anita and husband, Jack Rollins, of Grenada Hills, Calif., Kay Cox of Chicago, Ill., Elsie and husband Charlie Bracknies, and Lani France, all of Las Vegas, Nev., his aunt Lucille Hurst of Las Vegas, Nev., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Nicholas Hupchuk; family members, Steve Hupchuk, Bill Hupchuk, Joe DuMong, Jessica DuMong, Danny DuMong, Larry France, Bob Cox, and Leona Olson; and special friend, Andy Grynol. Mike was a kind, soft-spoken man whose greatest pride was his family. 'Grandpa's pickles' were a holiday favourite. Mike showed his love for his family by sharing his joy of nature. He loved to hunt , fish, garden and prospect, taking us with him on many adventures of knowledge. He called Rainy Lake 'God's Country.' 'Kuby' lived and breathed hockey. He was a member of the Fort Frances Allan Cup winning team of 1952. He was inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Thunder Bay, and had played hockey in Amsterdam Holland following World War II. He fought a brave battle for our country during the war, having served overseas with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He also was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 in Fort Frances. He had worked for Boise Cascade Paper Mill for 40 years, and retired in 1986 as a papermaker. Our loss saddens us but with joy we know he is now in the 'Hockey Hall of Heaven.' Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 7, 1996 at 1:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home. Rev. Patrick Playfair will officiate with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. Friends and family are welcome to visit Sunday, Oct. 6 from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Hupchuk home. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. c/o Dave Thornton, 840 Frenette Ave., Fort Frances, Ont. P9A 2N5. |
