Personal Notes:
Johannes Molenaar/Moolenaar 1767 – 1847
The first 2 branches of the family tree.

After four successive generations only one male successor has prevented the disappearance of our family. Then with Johannes the spread of the tree recommences together with the issue of his younger brother Cornelius. Together they produced 19 children out of which only four contributed to further growth.
This is really the only important item in our family history that is to be told about Johannes. His means of income was as a peat carter, assisting in the unloading of peat ships and as a barman. In those days peat was virtually the only fuel available for cooking and heating and the supply of the material would have provided a fairly regular labour market. Whilst the tapping of beer could be associated with the heavy and dusty work that the peat provided. If we try to form an image of him from the available information, he must have been a solidly built, strong individual. Heavy, dusty workloads, four marriages, 13 children and still able to reach the ripe old age of 80 years.
It is also known where he resided. Firstly in the Gasthuis straat then to the Turf Markt ( This street runs alongside the river Spaarne, can be translated to Peat Market so he lived close to his work. It is doubtful that he lived there happily because of the number of times he lost a wife there.
His first wife Anna van Elsland died 6th of February according to the monthly list of deaths and was due to scarlet fever, but not until 6 days after she gave birth to a son Jan Christiaan.
His second wife, Clazina van Stuyvenberg, died shortly after the birth of her son Nikolaas, this time death was due to chest congestion.
His third wife, Maria Klinkert, did not have any children. The marriage lasted less than 2 years and the cause of death this time perintinitus.
Only his fourth wife, Wijmpje de Zoeten, survived him by some 8 years. Earlier widow of Jan Breevoord since 17th April 1798 she married Johannes end January 1812 and in the same year presented him wih son Samuel on 7 November 1812 and named after her father. However this child too was not blessed with a long life and died 12th of May 1813 just 6 months old. However her second child, also named Samuel born on the 4th of September 1815 gave her some joy. She witnessed 40 years of his life and the birth of 9 grandchildren. What she and Johannes had not been able to experience were the artistic talents that were and still are preserved in the successors of Samuel Moolenaar. Talents such as music, painting and creative arts.
