Cornelis MOOLENAAR 1769 – 1831.
Cornelis Moolenaar was born in Haarlem on the 10th December 1769 and baptized 17 December of that year in the Dutch Reformed Church. His grand mother Heijltje Bottelier ( the widow of the above Cornelis ) and her second husband Johannes Marshoorn were recorded as witnesses. Cornelis, like his brother Johannes, must have been a powerful person because his trade was “sleeper”. A sleeper was a transporter of goods by means of a slee ( sleigh ). Vehicles using wheels were taxed and by using sleighs money could be saved, although it was very hard work. ( No mention was made whether horses were used but that would have meant the cost of purchase, feeding and stabling ).
Cornelis married Adrana Pietertje Paap on the 30th of April 1797. Adraiana was born in Zandvoort some 8 km west of Haarlem and situated on the coast. She was baptized on the 1st of March 1767, a daughter of Pieter Jans Paap and Klaartje Ewits Molenaar.
At the time of the marriage Cornelis’ name was recorded as Molenaar. Their address was given as on the Spaarne near the Melkbrug ( Milkbridge). Although the river Spaarne flows through Haarlem, a section of the road on the west side was also called ‘t Spaarne. There 6 children were born. The 6th child who was baptized on the 5th of September 1804 was given the names of Claas Tilly who was also recorded as a witness. Mr Claas Tilly was the inventor, creator and factory owner of the famous product Haarlemmer Olie, a mixture with a base of linseed oil, turpentine and sulphur that for many centuries ahd a reputation as a medical wonder cure. By giving the baby the name of Claas Tilly and that gentleman’s presence at the baptism, we may not only assume that Cornelis Molenaar transported goods to and from the factory but that they also had a closer relationship. The child died however a few weeks after birth and was buried in Haarlem on the 2nd of October 1804. A few years later, on the 26th of January 1808, his wife Adriana died, at which time there were still 3 surviving children all of minor age. Because of this Cornelis made a declaration the following year to the Municipal orphanage of Haarlem, the following text was retrieved from the archives:
“ Cornelis Molenaar, widower of Adriana PAAP. Act of proof under 50 guilders on 13 pril 1809.
On this day of 13 April 1809 appeared in the Orphanage of this City of Haarlem, Cornelis Molenaar, widower of Adriana Paap, and who wishes to marry with Petronella van Rijzen, declared to leave his 3 children, named Johannes, aged 11 and a half years, Pieter aged 10 years and Abraham Molenaar, aged 5 and a half years, each 10 guilders, together 30 guilders to be inherited from one to the other ( should one or more die ) and who he shall look after till their coming of age, he accepts and promises in addition to maintain them with lodgings, clothing and education all to standard conditions and situations by his person and assets either personal property or estate without exception and in particular a Stable in de St Anna street within this city and of which he maintains ownership and all able to be inforced by law and judgements.
Sanctioned and approved by Kors Pietersz Paap, being the children’s maternal uncle by signing a declaration to the Orphanage Board.
Board of Orphanage Messrs Jager, Thesing and Capellen. Recorded by me C.Gerlings.”

Cornelis married Petronella on the 16th of May 1809. She hailed from Zutphen in the province of Overijssel and was 41 years old at the time. There were no children out of this marriage. She died in Haarlem at the age of 57. Documents relating to her death indicate the possessions this couple had and the exact year the family name of Cornelis was officially changed to Moolenaar. At the time of the marriage he signed his document as Molenaar and although after her death all documents were written up with Molenaar, Cornelis sined each since as Moolenaar. From this we can assume hat the current spelling of the family name of descendants from Cornelis took place during or shortly before the year 1826. In various documents blunders were made as to the exact home address, however one accurately states his address as Paarlaarsteeg, Ward 4, No.1004. He stated therein that his recently departed wife, Petronella, had made a Will before Notary Jan Schouten in Haarlem on the 21st of February 1820 and that he, Cornelis, being sole beneficiary would act as executor. In the Will was stated that following her death and Cornelis’ death a sum of 100 guilders was to be bequeathed to her nephew and godchild, Pieter Scheffer. Her estate was calculated to be half a warehouse and premises situated at Paarlaarsteeg, Ward 4, No 1004 and half a warehouse and premises situated at St. Anna street, Ward 4, No672 and that the inheritance after debts had a total value of no more than 300 guilders. Pertaining to the family name , the declaration starts with the words:
I, undersigned, Cornelis Molenaar etc……… and finishes with his signature shown as C. Moolenaar.
Note: the Paarlaar steeg still exists and is situated between the Koning Straat and the Grote Houtstraat just south ot the Grote Markt. ( the town square ).
