Personal Notes:
Henry HAYWARD was a Private in the British Army. Records show that he was a foot soldier in the 54th Regiment of Foot. The date he joined is not known as there is a gap in the Regimental records from Aug. 1770 to Apr. 1774, but they show him in Granard Ireland (now Co. Longford ) in June 1770, Cork from June 1774 to Apr. 1775 and Dingle July to Sept, 1775. In Aug.1776 his unit sailed for America (aboard the "Lord North"). He was stationed at Statten Island, Rhode Island, New York Island, Paulus Hook, Magowen Pass (York Island), and was "discharged" 21 Aug. 1783 at Statten Island. "This info was researched by Mary Beth Bob Wheeler in the PR O, Surrey, England.

Henry HAYWARD was accompanied by his wife, Isabella (GRIFFITH(S)). The Army allowed a small number of wives to travel with the Regiments. I don't know where Isabella was from. A wife's lot was not great as they were expected to do many domestic chores for the rest of the Regiment. George Griffith HAYWARD, their 1st son, was born in Ireland and christened in St. Paul's Church, Dublin in 1773, and 2nd son, William, born about 1775 also likely in Ireland . They came with Henry when his Regiment was sent to America during the American War of Independence .
Henry moved to NS about 1784 and received a land grant of 500 acres at Windsor Road Township , Hants Co., NS in Mar 1784 and lived there until about 1800 or 1801. The land was rocky and unsuitable for farming so he sold out and moved to Hopewell Cape/Shepody, Westmoreland Co ., NB about 1800. His wife had died and was buried in Brooklyn, NS, Jan 17 1789. The books,"Loyalists & Land Settlement in NS" by Mirion Gilmore,1937 and "Whereabouts of Some American Refugees, 1784-1800" by Clifford Neil Smith, 1994, Confirms the NS Land Grant and of 1785 and lists Henry among others who were in the 84th Regiment. ( Was he in this Regiment or likely a misprint?)

The area to which he moved to in NB had been settled by the Acadians and the forests cleared and the marshes diked, etc. There was also other land available for his sons to buy and they were nearer the sea and closer to market. Henry married 3 times and fathered 4, 3 and 2 children accordingly. He died Mar 25 1 808 in Hopewell Parish, Westmoreland Co., NB. His will provided for his wife,Nancy (No. 3) and all his family. About 2 years before his death, he deeded one half of his farm to his eldest son, George Griffith Hayward. Henry was buried on a knoll on his own land overlooking the bay at Mountville (Hopewell Cape/Shapody). The stones are still there and I have a photo I took of them in 1988. It reads " In MEMORY of HENRY HAYWARD who Departed this Life March 25 , 1808 in the 63 year of his Life"

This information has been collected by ancestors of Hugh Doherty, gleaned from old family records, letters and clippings. Also from some valuable research done by Eunice M. Hayward Franks, #210-193 Lockwood Rd. Regina Sask. CAN and from research and family info supplied by Mary Beth Wheeler, 51 Darren Dr. Dernards Township, Martinsville, NJ, USA, 08836. (Nov. 1996) . Received with thanks.
Mary Beth's husband Bob, is descended from Henry's 3rd son, John Sr., (by Isabella) (GRIFFITH (S)). He moved to Maine, USA in 1821. Henry's 2nd wife, was Jane (McColl ?). She was born in Windsor Township, Hants Co., NS, May 9, 1781. They married Dec 15, 1790 in NS, She died about 1797 in Windsor, NS. Henry's 3rd wife was Nancy COPP, born c1784. They married c1803.
