Personal Notes: |
George Hayward was born in Dublin Ire. about 1773 when his father, Henry was there with the British Army. George was christened in St. Paul's Church. Baptism certificate shows this date to be 20 Mar. 1774 at St. Paul's Church His brother, William may have been born there also , about 1775. The Family came to Windsor, Hants Co. NS in about 1784. He moved with the family to Hopewell (Shapody) in about 1800. George was deeded half his fathers farm about 1806 and was named in the will to receive a further 5 shillings. George moved again about 1811 to Sussex area in Kings Co. NB. he bought 400 acres of improved land there from Philip Force and his son, William for 850 pounds. He was a farmer and operated Haywards Mill at Dutch Valley, Sussex Co., NB.
He was a member of the Church of England, but later changed his support to the newly formed Methodist Church. He was known to have been a staunch Weslyan, as was his father. He arranged for the first ordained Methodist minister, Rev. Michael Pickles, to settle in the Parish of Sussex, Kings Co., and contributed largely to the construction of the first Methodist church building in Sussex. Rev. Pickles later married his daughter, Abigail Hayward.
Provincial Archives of NB, RS 108, "Land Petitions", show George and ten others petitioned for land in Parish Sussex, Kings Co. Jan 31, 1820. In that petition, George stated that he was born in Ireland, is 45 years old with a wife and 8 children and had resided in Nova Scotia and " this province" since 1783. He asked for 500 acres. George is buried with his wife, in the Anglican cemetery in Sussex, Kings Co .
