sent by Sandra Thorne 2015: (This is from an unnamed Saint John, NB Newspaper 29 August 1940) "Was Born on Night of Saint John Fire - Earlier Days Recalled by Death Recently of Gilbert D. Davidson. To many in Saint John news of the death of Gilbert D. Davidson who passed away in the Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Campbellton on August 26 brought sorrow for the greater part of his life had been spent in Saint John and warm friendships had come with the years. It is of interest to recall that he was born June 20, 1877 during the night of the Great Fire. He was a son of Gilbert and Sarah Davidson, cousin of the late Lt. Gov. William Pugsley, Samuel and William Hayward and was linked in relationship with several other old families of NB. Mr. Davidson's associatio with commercial photography extended over a long period and included progress photography of the docks at West Saint John, the bridge over the Reversing Falls, the dry dock and other constructions. Examples of his good work are on the walls of many offices. Mr. Davidson and family lived in Saint John until five years ago when they removed to Montreal. There he was engaged with Rapid Grip and Batten in their photographic department. He became seriously ill last January and had been at his son's home in Dalhousie since May until he entered hosptial three weeks ago. Surviving are his wife, formerly Miss Mollie Hamm of West Saint John, his son, G. Donald, Dalhousie, a daughter, Ruth Hayward, Shawinigan, Que., two grandsons and a granddaughter, three sisters, Mrs. C.C. Russ of P.E.I., Mrs. Wm. F. Lewis of Saint John and Mrs. D. E. Brown of Winnipeg. He was a member of Central Baptist Church and his funeral service held at Dalhousie was conducted by Capt. the Rev. H. K. Grimmer, until his recent appointment as an army chaplain, past of the 1st Baptist Church, Campbellton. In music circles Mr. Davidson is remembered as an excellent concert banjoist and he taught that instrument as well as the mandolin and the guitar. He was a member of the American Guild of Musicians and had brought the Boston Glee Club, Alfred Farland and other artists to give concerts in Saint John. His appearance on concert programs always ensured pleasure and it afforded him a real satisfaction to have contributed to the musical life of the city." |
