Personal Notes:
Antoine Émery dit Coderre
The original member of the Emery line in Canada, Antoine was born on August 6, 1643 in the quiet French town of Sarrazac, arrondisement of Nontron, province of Périgord. He was the son of Mégny Émery and Marguerite Pasquau.

Antoine arrived in Canada on August 19, 1665, aboard the La Paix, as a member of the compagnie de Contrecoeur, in the famous Régiment de Carignan.

Following two years of service, he was demobilized in 1668 and decided to remain in Canada. On April 13, 1674, Antoine and Marie Devault consented to their marriage contract in Contrecoeur, Verchères, QC in the presence of notary Adhémar. Marie was the daughter of Jacques Devault and Louise Folure. Marie, a "fille du roi" was born, circa 1649, in Nogent-le-Roi, Dreux, Orléanais, France.

There were eleven children born of this marriage, six of whom survived to adulthood. Marie Devault died on December 6, 1687 and was buried the next day at Repentigny at the same time as her last daughter who was six weeks old.

On June 5, 1688, in Boucherville, in the presence of notary Moreau, the 44 year old Antoine remarried. His new bride was Marie-Anne Favreau, the 16 year old daughter of Pierre Favreau dit Deslauriers and Marie Benoit. Antoine and Pierre were both members of the same company in the Carignan Regiment.

Antoine and Marie-Anne had nine children, all of whom reached adulthood. Antoine died circa 1716 and Marie-Anne, after marrying a second time to Joseph Circé dit Saint-Michel, died and was buried in Contrecoeur on April 3, 1737 at the age of 69.

With Antoine the father of 15 children who had families of their own, he left a strong foundation for the growth of the Emery name in Canada.

Our Emery line goes back to Antoine through Joseph Emery dit Coderre, the fifth of the nine children of Antoine's second marriage to Marie-Anne Favreau.
